I've seen this happen under two circumstances:

1) You're running CT under a multitasking operating system.

2) You're pc isn't fast enough (or is being bogged down in some way
   by other TSR's)

The resulting clicks are simply the pc " going away" and devoting time to
other applications.

The solution is (usually) :

1) Run CT from DOS (_not_ a DOS window under Windows)
2) Eliminate other resident programs that could be using processor time.
   (You should be too busy during the contest to use them anyway!)
3) Faster computer

#3 is always desirable, but not necessary. I've run the DVP with
perfect audio on a 386SX-16.
