Bill,
Your original message did not catch my attention since it had a generic
title - sorry.
You may have a problem with the 850. One of mine would "receive" from the
computer, but would not "transmit" data to it. I found that something
"hangs" on the digital board and all you need to do is disconnect all the
cables connected to it (inside the 850) and it will reset and come back to
life. You can verify this in TR. See if the frequency displayed actually
changes when you spin the knob. My suspicion is that it may not. The only
difference is that TR does not give you an error message that the radio is
not talking like CT does.
If it's not the 850, then this has to do with other hardware - most likely
your serial ports or the device you are using as an interface from the rig
to the computer. You're probably
not using a Kenwood device and sometimes, this is the phenomena you run in
to with interfaces that do not handle the handshaking properly.
When I switched to a pair of 850's instead of a 940, I tried to do some of
the "cheaper" alternatives instead of buying another IF232C for my second
radio. As you have seen, they work with TR (because TR does not use
hardware handshaking) but they do not work with CT, or most likely any other
program like many logging programs that require hardware handshaking - in my
case, DX4WIN.
I found that you can modify an IF232C to handle 2 radios fairly easily and
am working on an article about how to do it. Essentially al the parts you
need are there except for a few resistors, capacitors and some optocouplers.

Bob N5NJ
