[ct-user] kenwood 850 and freq. read

I'm using ver 9.57.004 in the wpx with my 850 connected to com2 as
4800,n,8,2. Rig works fine when I grab a spot or type freq in window but
when I try a spot or log a station it seems the freq info is not making it
to the program; looks like one way communication ct>radio but no radio<ct.
Is there a setting I missed?
