I just stuck two 100mW Demarctech Prism2.5 radios in my KN-200 base and it cleared up all of my radio-related problems I was having with Hermes I cards at the base side. Also, I have been using the "200mW" (really 180mW) SMC high-powered cards in KN-50 CPE because they are cheap and effective.

A bunch of KN-50 CPE I put out there with Hermes I radios worked like crap (massive packet loss/failures, complete loss of connectivity for 2-10 mins) until I replaced the radios with the SMC cards.

If you never plan to use an amplifier and this isn't for mass-producing 50 CPE units where cost really matters, you should probably use the 200mW Demarctech Prism2.5 cards. I say Demarctech as opposed to the SMC because the Demarctech cards seem to be worth every penny. The SMC cards are much cheaper (with decreased receive sensitivity) but still get the job done well for those mass-produced cheap CPE situations.

The Hermes I chipset radios (orinoco gold/silver classic, etc.) are not the greatest thing to be using it seems. Karlnet seems to be of this opinion, also.

Sorry I don't have a setup like yours and can't comment on your specific problem but hopefully that's helpful.

I am curious to see if anyone else has had problems with signal strength (db), dropping a 25% and packet loss at the same time, for no clear reason, with perfect line-of-sight. I have now seen it between my main COR running 4.15 and a ROR running 4.31. I am going to upgrade both to the latest release, but I figured I would check with my fellow Karlnet peeps and see if i am looking at a different issue. I have also seen this between a YDI Eth-Ant and an AP interface on a ROR running 4.15, so I am not sure what firmware relationships could be the issue. On top of it, both shots, when the db strength drops, still exhibit an SNR above 16, which may not be great, but normally do not cause packet loss. There is ample signal spread between the two radios and radios in the area, at least the ones I control, and if there was a noise issue, I would expect the noise to rise, not the strength of the radios to drop. I am almost wondering if the radio cards (Orinoco Gold/ and or Av
a!
ya) are the issue. I may need to start looking into a better radio solution. I dunno. Any thoughts?
