I'm going through my anual rethink and wondering how
best to deal with the growth of our wireless network.
We have several POPs - about a dozen or so with
varying numbers of clients connected to each. Most of
our network is fully routed, but some smaller POPs are
simple bridges. I'm wondering if anyone has some
experience they can share in how big a bridged network
can get before performance drops by a reasonable
amount? IP addressing is obviously far simpler with a
large bridged network, but I don't want to waste my
precious throughput. I'm thinking about having the
main POPs fully routed with smaller POPs bridged off
the main ones.
Our network has been routed pretty much from the
start, so I have not seen any real issues with
bridging in the real world. I understand the issues
with bridging, I'm just not sure how to work out how
far you can push it with bridging before a routed
network makes a significant difference. Perhaps some
of you have had experiences with large bridged
networks that you had to change to a routed network?
