In my experience, 2.4GHz OFDM vs. 2.4GHz DSSS gets a lot more speed with less SNR and even provides a higher possible ceiling for those situations where your signal isn't just on the edge of acceptable.

This same generalization is reflected in the documentation for most existing 802.11g products that mention radio specs. For example, I'm looking at the Proxim/Orinoco AP-600 docs right now. Here are some listed receiver sensitivities:

DSSS 5.5mbit: -85
DSSS 11mbit: -82

OFDM 12mbit: -87
OFDM 18mbit: -84
OFDM 24mbit: -81
OFDM 36mbit: -79
OFDM 48mbit: -72
OFDM 54mbit: -70

Going by this, you can get about 18mbit out of what would otherwise be 5.5mbit with 802.11b. Off the top of my head I can say I am able to get around 10 or 11mbit real IP throughput after overhead out of an access point forced to 18mbit.

With the new OFDM products being supported w/ karlnet (802.11g/802.11a)
does OFDM require a better SNR than DSSS?
