I've been toying around with Contest Voice Blaster here the last
few days, and wanted to pass along to the NA group that I've
had good success with a sound board put out by DCS Multimedia.
It's a model #S711. It was claimed to be Sound Blaster Pro
compatible. However, it does *not* come with a CT-VOICE.DRV
driver, which is required for use with CVB. But...
I experimented with a CT-VOICE.DRV that came with my 3 yr
old Soundblaster board in my work computer, and lo and behold,
it talks to the DCS board just fine. I've banged on the software
(using it with NA 10.21) for a while now, and have experienced
no problems. Computer is a 486-33dx with 8mb ram, SVGA and
512 hd. Using rig control (ic765), cw keying from com1, packet,
and ptt on lpt1. Sound board parameters are i/o220, Irq7, DMA 1.
I did have trouble using a Win 95 type keyboard with CVB and NA -
you know, the ones with the extra Win 95 keys. Seemed that key trapping
was not releasing keypresses to NA or something - real quirky.
Anyway, switching to a "normal" keyboard corrected the trouble.
Will probably try an updated CT-VOICE.DRV and see if the board
still works. Then build the audio in/out and ptt interface circuit as
shown in the CVB instructions. I'll report back to the group if
anyone is interested.
Why mess with a "SB compatible" board, instead of the real thing?
The DCS board is 19 bucks, and I'm a cheapskate. There, I said it.
