Tom,

No, we never recommended a RAMDRIVE for the call database, which would
require NA to look on a different drive (other than the default) for
MASTER.DTA.  I think you're remembering the suggestion to use the SMARTDRV
disk cache, which I briefly described in a response to K7BG.

I would still recommend using SMARTDRV, even with a fast CPU.  A Pentium
does not speed up the hard disk accesses, which is the main delay when
using a call database.  A Pentium-class machine typically is equipped with
a fast hard disk, but it still can't keep up with RAM.  If you're running
NA in a DOS window under Win95/NT, I *think* the disk cache is
automatically enabled based on the response times I've seen.  However, like
many things under Win95, its difficult to discern what's truly going on :-(

Dave,

Didn't you recommend at one time using a RAMDRIVE and copying the
master.dta file to it and running it from there? I seem to remember doing
that on my 486 a few years ago. I'm spoiled now with a P200 in the shack!!
