Doesn't seem to work that way in the II, despite the way it's still
described in the manual.

Interesting.  My observations with the II are quite the opposite.  On a
strong signal, it does well, really quieting down the band hiss very
effectively, without overly mushing up the signal.  As the signal gets
closer and closer to the band noise level, distortion on the signal
increases substantially with the signals getting (the only way I know how to
describe it) "gritty", but with very little actual noise reduction. 

We all seem to be feeling something different on the side of the elephant.
There's got to be ONE answer here somewhere (?) :-)
