Martin,
I hope you enjoy using the ORION II for PSK.

The AUX jack pin 4 provides combined audio (Main & Sub) and these outputs
need to be enabled via the "MENUS/Other/Line Out SRC & Line Out Level"
controls. (NOTE: The original ORION provides Main receiver output on pin 4
and Sub receiver output on pin 6 so the original ORION can have a spectrum
display for each receiver, whereas the ORION II must display both receivers
in a single spectrum display unless you choose to take the audio output from
the headphone jack, which has certain considerations as well...).

You do not need to add isolation for the AUX pin 4 audio output as it is
already isolated adequately at this port.

The usual way to configure the ORION II power is to set PWR for 100%, set up
your sound card audio output for "Wave" @ 3/4 to full scale, the audio out
or "Play" control @3/4 scale or less and then adjust your power using the
"MENUS/SSB/TX Audio Source" set to "BOTH" and adjust the "Aux Input Gain"
(found in the same menu) to the power output level you desire but make sure
the ALC red LED does not light on the peak output. If needed you can adjust
your sound card to make the "Aux Input Gain" control less sensitive in
adjustment and to give you more range. Some people have reported that this
"Aux Input Gain" value may need adjusted to different values on different
bands. I have not noticed this, but if it is a problem, you could try
different sound card output values to achieve the desired power out levels
as well.

I think the ORION II meter will show "peak" power in PSK because the
modulation is constant and does not "average" especially when you are
sending character information. Generally, if you run power set just below
the level that would trigger the ALC you should be over 50 watts output or
more and I recommend a cooling fan. I usually run with the power meter
showing 50 or around S-7 on the meter and even then after a while the heat
sink will be uncomfortable to rest my hand against.

A good program to help with this operation is the N4PY control software. I
use it to control my ORION II and coordinate MixW with it for the digital
modes and log book. You can read about it some more @ http://ka7u.us .

Hope to hear you on the air!
Ron

Hi All,

Would like to inquire as to the setup and pin out used for PSK 31 operation.

I've looked at the list archives and determined the Auxiliary pin out.
I'm not sure about pins 4/6 is this left and right audio out lines? If used
with monorial input on sound card is isloation an issue. I do have some
transformers that would work nicely. Another thing I understand that
because of duty cycle one should not run max power, however, if I understand
it correctly in PSK 31 mode the meter is registered as peak power and not
average, therefore its ~ 50 watts, is this correct? Lot of questions for a
first timer, would appreciate any input

Thanks
Martin
