At 0805 UTC, 9 August 2011, the Sun erupted with an X6.9 (X7) X-ray flare.
This is the largest yet in Sunspot Cycle 24. This caused an R3-level
radio blackout on the sunlit side of Earth, and, pushed the Earth into an
S1-level solar radiation storm that triggered a polar cap absorption event
(PCA). Propagation over the polar regions is suffering as a result.
