Thanks Bill & everyone for your comments re my line noise problem.  It's 
gone for now so I'm enjoying the quiet it while it lasts.  Once you operate 
without any noise, it becomes impossible to go back to the old conditions.

I had a cyclic noise problem like this and it turned out to be a defective
street lamp.  It was trying to fire, not quite making it, resetting itself 
and
trying again.  Your mentioning the 23 second interval triggered my memory.

It doesn't have to be a street lamp of course.  Any thing that's trying to 
start
and not quite making it could be the culprit.
