Jim's point about directional properties of antennas away from their
design frequencies is well taken.
Another hint, learned from Fox Hunting, is that an HT with a duck
can be form a directional antenna at VHF and UHF by holding it close
to your chest, letting your body block the reception from one
direction. It worked well enough on 2M to get me (and some others)
quite close to the Fox pretty quickly in club hunts.
