Just remember that the converters/inverters for solar panels are
developing a reputation for being extremely noisy. What the percentage
of good stuff Vs junk is, I don't know.

I see all these homes the owners brag about the amount of power they get
from solar panels. then I see the total. They, on average, don't come
anywhere near what it takes for me to run my computers let alone,
lights, refrigerator, and TV.

We've been slowly converting our home to the so called, "green" with
good insulation and windows. Good windows are *expensive* and it takes
a lot of digging to find what's really good. Local contractors, have
developed biases toward thermopane, tri-pane, and different
manufacturers. I do plan on adding solar photo voltaic panels, but
those suckers make the windows look cheap and I have some deep concerns
about the noise from inverters.

I need to save up for a good, but used spectrum analyzer that runs from
basically VLF to about 5 Gig.

However, I'm going to be doing much of the work myself if I can get it
through the zoning as to retrofit out small home of ~1000 to 1200 sq ft
is easily on the order of $50,000 if done commercially and here we do
not get any where the subsidy or tax breaks of say California. I can
get $500 total toward the windows when each one is considerably more
than that. I can get $500 for retrofit foam insulation and similar for
photovoltaic cells. I'm stuck with commercial installations of the
windows and insulation if I want any rebates or subsidies. The same
goes for the photovoltaic cell installation and backup, but I might be
able to save considerably more by doing it myself, but lead acid
batteries are not satisfactory. Then there is the solar heated hot
water. Parabolic, linear reflectors to heat water stored in large,
insulated underground tanks with heat exchangers in the furnace and
water heater, could virtually eliminate the heating bills, but again,
even doing it myself is expensive.

It was probably nothing more than a series diode and dropping resistor
with no filtering.
