The only one of those we have is a store card. I assume -- but of course
I could be wrong -- that it will respond only when it receives an "Are
you there?" signal that is specific to that particular chain of stores.
The one time we did lose money because of such technology was when we
shipped our "EZ-Pass" (automated toll-fee device) back to NY in order to
retrieve our remaining balance after moving to the Midwest. When we got
the statement and the refund, we noticed a debit of a few $$ for a toll
booth somewhere in NY a day or two after we had mailed it back. We
assumed that it had responded to the interrogation signal while it was
in the USPS or UPS (don't recall which) truck. We didn't bother
challenging it.
