I do quite well with my Yeasu FT-60, AM mode, 130-150 MHz range, quarter wave whip for 450 MHz. Volume up, squelch off, you won't hear much until you get within a few tens of feet of an offending power pole or other noisy item, it works very, very well. A Yagi might help, depending on your application, but with the small whip I don't hear noise until I am at the source.
