That's called municipal broadband and you are very fortunate to have
it.  Only a few communities have managed to set it up.

Why?  Because in many cases, the cost as a bond issue gets put on the
ballot for a vote in the next town election.  Guess what happens in
the mean-time.  Every ISP, namely the big players in town, spend
millions of dollars on a flood of direct mail for weeks on end warning
of the dangers of municipal broadband.  Oh, your taxes will go sky
high (nonsense).  We went through it where I live and there was a 5
week period when every single day there were at least two items of
junk mail from BIG ISP full of fear mongering.  Sadly, most people
believed the propaganda.
