Last year I replaced a pair of 25 year old Trane heat pumps with new Trane high efficiency units. I specified single speed blowers for the air handlers, because being able to hear well on HF is more important to me than a few percent of efficiency loss. I just didn't want to take any chances. As far as I can tell after a year of contesting in cold and warm seasons, I have experienced zero RFI from the new systems. I have zero regrets going with the single speed air handlers. My heating and cooling bills are dramatically lower anyway, as the old units were not nearly as efficient. As Mike said, YMMV.

The variable speed fan motors or those units with them APPEAR to have

Mine was that way and a friend close by had the same crud from one. ( I
think his was a LEXAIR or something like that.) At any rate, nothing
could be done about it here but to replace the motor with a single speed
unit. All's quiet now... Your results may vary. - Mike

It would be a great service if the ARRL would publish a database on
their website, with model numbers, of devices to stay away from.

I've had such terrible experiences with Carrier residential units I
just have to put it out there: as far as I'm concerned Carrier is
absolute junk. 4 different "high end" units in 4 different homes -
nothing but problems. The "high end" dual fuel system in my personal
residence was a much better RFI generator than it was a heat pump.
Just sayin. Glad to hear other folks have had better experiences than me.

Same here with the Carrier top of the line high if gas furnace,
58MVP060, August 2000 and not a RF peep from it.

We installed a 96% efficient Carrier gas furnace a few years back, not
a bit of RFI. Bryant is a subsidiary of Carrier so i would expect
similar results with Bryant

I have no first hand experience with Trane but have seen complaints on
this reflector.... as an HVAC engineer I have used both in large
industrial applications, but residential is a different story...

A cheap hand held short wave receiver would be good for testing RFI at
the big box appliance stores.... be sure they put the unit in actual
operating mode, as the "showroom" mode does not use motors, just
lights....

I wish I had taken the time to pre-test that @#$%^& Samsung
refrigerator instead of telling the XYL to buy what she wants....
