There is one house that I know of here in this city of 85000 and it’s about six
blocks from me, it has the entire South side roof covered with solar panels. I
don’t know the people so have not had the chance to ask what they are using
and how it’s working out for them. Up here we have a lot of cloudy days
espeially in the winter months. For example today is a hazy Sun, but very warm
and humid. I also wonder about mantaining these solar panels, do they need
care and are they susceptible to damage from hail, wind and ice. There isn’t a
big push up here for solar like there is for wind power. The power company,
Excel energy has some wind farms in the South part of the state I believe. Our
electricity is slightly over .09/Kwhour. We also have a great supply of fresh
clean water and two or three nucler power plants. I happen to like the nuclear
way of producing electricity. Waterpower also is good, but we don’t have any
grand coolege dams here :)

When we had the house built, solar was presented to us as an option. The
ROI was roughly 15 to 20 years. Since we were both pushing the 70 mark at
the time, we would never see the ROI, so we are on grid power.

I also had grave reservations regarding the bad rap (deserved) that the
whole solar industry has wrt RFI. Any installer would first have to prove
to me that the installation produced absolutely NO RFI radiated or
conducted emissions from 1 kHz through 10 GHz. I am not aware of a single
system offered today that could conform to those requirements. My 'other'
hobby is radio astronomy.
