This is a follow up on the long-standing RFI issue with my neighbor's
Generac Solar System. The system has been offline for over a year, while
Generac sought a solution. They finally replaced the "PVLink" units,
which are boost converters connected to each solar panel string. Today,
the sun came out, and the system was producing about 50 percent of full
power. I could not detect any RFI. So, I'm cautiously optimistic, but
reserve final judgement until the system runs at full power. I'll post
another update.
The neighbor is about 600 meters away, in an urban area with overhead
power distribution lines, so the background noise level is fairly high.
Still, had this been my next door neighbor, the noise level would have
been extremely high. Whether the modified units would be RFI-free in
that case, or at a greater distance in a low-noise area is unknown.
As I've pointed out before, several of my nearby neighbors and I have
microinverter systems from Enphase and AP Systems, which have caused no
detectable RFI.
Unfortunately, my very cooperative neighbor is having no end of problems
getting the system to operate reliably, though that doesn't seem to have
anything to do with RFI.
Generac really should have stuck to generators.
