I didn't realize where Aves was located until recently. And at 6 ft. above sea
level, I'd get out of there too with the storm approaching.

Aves is actually 3 feet higher than my QTH! But at least we have a levee and
system of pumps to keep the water out (most of the time). Now many of you know
why I went QRT after the first few hours of the 1998 CQWW RTTY Contest when
Hurricane Georges approached. Ham Radio is not worth losing your life over.

I imagine Aves is mostly under water tonight after looking at this satellite
view of the tropical wave over the island that has just been downgraded from a
tropical depression.

Here's what the National Weather Service is saying about the system that caused
YV0D to go QRT:

THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER HAS DISCONTINUED ADVISORIES ON FORMER
TROPICAL DEPRESSION TWO...LOCATED ABOUT 380 MILES SOUTH-SOUTHEAST
OF SAN JUAN PUERTO RICO. THE SYSTEM HAS DEGENERATED INTO A TROPICAL
WAVE AS IT CONTINUES TO MOVE QUICKLY WESTWARD AT 23 MPH. HOWEVER...
THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY REMAINS REASONABLY WELL ORGANIZED AND LOCALLY
HEAVY RAINFALL MAY OCCUR OVER PORTIONS OF HISPANIOLA DURING THE
NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. IF NECESSARY...AN AIR FORCE RESERVE
RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT WILL INVESTIGATE THE SYSTEM THURSDAY
MORNING FOR ANY SIGNS OF REGENERATION.
...

For anyone interested, here is an excellent site for keeping an eye on tropical
weather in the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic:

http://www.srh.noaa.gov/tlh/tropical/

It's the best one I've found over the years of living on the Gulf Coast.

Hope they made it back to the continent OK.
