I'm no great expert on this, but if you are running Windows XP you should be 
able to change the com port number. Go to Control
Panel>
System>Hardware>Device Manager>Ports. Expand Ports to show your
present Com5 port. Right-click on your Com5 port and click on Properties. Click 
on Port Settings>Advanced. At the bottom of this
window you will see the port number as 5. Change it to whatever you like, but 
try to avoid conflicts with other hardware such as
your modem, etc.

That should allow you to choose a port between 1 and 4. Sorry this is so 
complex, but that's how Windows is.
