Welcome to the call confusion club Donald.
George, K4GM, lives ~10 miles from me and is getting active in RTTY
contesting. During several recent contests, including the WPX,
stations answer my CQ or my S&P call with K4GM or at least that is
what's printed on my screen. Most of the time I will send my call a
couple of times at the end of my message and hope the other station
realizes it is K4GMH rather than K4GM. Most stations acknowledge my
call, but others don't. So don't know how many QSO will be lost due
to the incorrect call being logged by the other station.
Unfortunately, the same holds true for George. He has told me a
couple of times how stations come back to him as K4GMH. Maybe it
will be a "wash" in the scoring - he'll get mine and I'll get his.....
Probably the biggest reason for the call confusion is too much
reliance on Super Check Partial as K4GM comes up first. Should there
be a misprint on the "H" in my call his will be the only one
displayed (haven't heard any other K4GM..... in a RTTY contest -
yet). Although that isn't what was copied, SCP just says K4GM is
good enough.
Oh well, maybe I should vanity the call I had until 1965 as it is
still open - W9WQQ
