There may be something unique about the HAL circuitry that would be
defeated by fast AGC, but the traditional rule is that for a
carrier-type mode such as RTTY or AM, fast AGC is preferred to
compensate for rapid changes in carrier level due to propagation. 

It won't hurt to try different speeds. Please post your findings. I'm
curious to see what works best.
