Every TNC I've ever used required a standard (straight-thru) serial cable. 
TNC's are configured as DCE (data communications equipment, same as a 
telephone modem), and your computer's serial port is configured as DTE (data 
terminal equipment).  Null modem cables are only needed when connecting DCE 
to DCE or DTE to DTE, unless the manufacturer did not follow the RS-232 
standard....
