Exactly!
In this contest the exchange is pretty simple.
The logging software auto fills the zone by call area.
So if the US station is in the same zone as his call then only the state is
important.
If the US station is in a different zone than his call the zone and state is
important to get across in the exchange.
I prefer spaces to any other method

It does not really matter to me if I receive the zone as figs or letters any
op worth his salt can soon sort it.
What does matter is receiving the correct exchange in the first place be it
figs or ltrs.
If condx are poor extend your macro ie.
599 05 05 05 VA VA VA
When asked for a repeat just send the exchange and the callsign at the END
this usually takes care of any QSB problems.
