Sorry for the delayed comment, but I just came up for air from harvest this
week! I'm spending the day correcting formats on hundreds of logs rejected
by the CQ WW RTTY robot so they can be submitted for log checking. Anyway,
about this thread ...

For the CQ contests, our log checking software enables us to declare a given
QSO "good" in one log and "bad" in another log, if the situation so
dictates. This happens automatically if one station busts the exchange.
The software also automatically catches busted call signs that are off by
one or two characters. If three or more characters are busted in a call
sign, then we have to manually examine the "reverse log" to determine if an
innocent station would otherwise get a NIL because their call is busted in
another log. Probably more detail than you want or need to know, but the
answer to Fabi's original query is that we strive to only penalize the
station making the mistake.

A very few contests, e.g., Russian DX, take the position that two-way
communication is the responsibility of both stations and both logs are
dinged for any mistake in either one of them. They even go so far as to
remove QSOs with stations who do not submit a log! Not necessarily a wrong
approach, but certainly different than most contests.
