Hello all,
Neal, K4EA & I had a ball operating mobile in this year's GQP. We operated
from 44 counties almost exclusively on CW - we tried phone a couple of
times, but were unable to stir up any contacts. We sure could have used the
mults, but our QSO rate was so good on CW we hated to leave the pile-ups...
Neal operated the laptop (with GPS interface) for logging and navigation -
that sure came in handy for figuring how far it was to the county lines. I
mounted my paddle in front of the center console in the truck. That made
for easy CW operation while driving.
I bought a Yaesu FT-100D at the Gainesville Hamfest, so I had a week to
install and figure out how to run it before the GQP. My last-minute flurry
happened when Dick, K5AND, offered us the use of his High Sierra (Model
HS-1500MKII) mobile antenna. Now that I have it installed onto my truck
toolbox, I'm just going to have to buy it from him... It works great!
We traveled from Hart county down to Savannah on Saturday and camped in the
Fort McAllister State Park. There we hung a 40M vertical and spent the last
hour operating from a concrete picnic table - we had no problem sleeping
that night.
We swung up through Central GA for our return trip. There are some
mosquitoes down there that are as big as a Buick... Take lots of insect
repellant if you go there!
We had several folks hunt us down in almost every county - top 10 were:
