My first contest (I was not ready for the 1958 CQ WW) was the 1958 ARRL =
SS. I used a new HQ110 and a homebrew 5763/6146 exciter driving a new =
homebrew amp with a 4-400 in the final. For the contest (you got a mult =
for low power) I got a soft 4-125A from W5GRP. He and the local club =
Pres signed a statement that I was running 150 watts input (NOT OUTPUT). =
Switching the amp required throwing a panel switch on the front panel. =
I made 921 QSOs and ended up with a sore hand from switching. My dad =
and I changed to a footswitch
after that. The operation was 100% AM phone. The effort did get my =
picture in QST..=20
My dad and I tried to work 7G1A on 15 CW in the 1959 ARRL DX CW but =
using a mon-key and having to throw the switch he was making three =
contacts while we tried to call him. The footswitch was the key to =
making contacts. 7G1A was a Czech ham operating from Africa and =
operated at 50WPM with KWM1. He later operated from 7G1A/TZ. We tried =
a Johnson TR switch but it failed so we retreated to the footswitch =
(Which I still have).=20
