You might be interested in the results of this month's QRP Spartan
Sprint. Held Monday night. Results sent out Thursday night. See what
some of you were missing. Several GA stations participated. 73, John,

Results of the March 2005 Spartan Sprint
The bands were long on Monday with little activity on 20 meters and
everyone migrating to 40 meters. Logs were up but QSOs were down.
Total logs this month were 82, up 2 from last month.
Here's the band statistics:
Band This Month Last Month
80M - 584 661 QSOs
40M - 1623 1562 QSOs
20M - 67 354 QSOs
15M - 0 0 QSOs
10M - 0 0 QSOs
Total - 2274 2577 QSOs
Skinny Winners -
This category is becoming ultra light. None of the top three scores
weighed over a third of a pound.
Brent WB4X won the Skinny Division this month with 14 QSO's on 80 meters
and 23 on 40 meters. His 0.228 pound rig netted 162.28 points per pound.
Steve N7SR was second with 31 QSOs, all but one on 40 meters. His rig
was a very light 0.2 pounds.
Dick N4HAY came in third with 49 points and .319 pounds.
Tubby Division Winners -
Top score overall went to Bruce K5PTC at a whopping 119.
In close pursuit again this month was Ken N6RO with a big 114 contacts.
Tom K3TW took third with 96 QSOs.
Single Band Entry Winners -
Of those who only entered on one band, here are the winners by band:
Skinny Division
80 Meters - WA9TZE 41 points at 1.37 points per pound
40 Meters - K4PQC 22 points at 117.02 points per pound
20 Meters - AE6N-AZ 3 points at 2.68 points per pound
Tubby Division
80 Meters - WA9TZE - 41 QSOs
40 Meters - W?NTA-CO - 62 QSOs
20 Meters - AE6N-AZ - 3 QSOs
Late Logs -
In February K5GQ had a good contest with 45 QSOs, all on 40 meters.
Special Recognition, Outside Operation -
AE6N-AZ
KX1 into a 20 meter dipole with a 300 ohm electrical halfwave feed line.
Set up in the field running 2 watts. I was testing an antenna I plan on
using in FD and BB tests.
AD6WE
SMK-1 one-watt mod 7-aH gel cell curtis keyer/bencher paddle homebrew
vertical Not really worrying about weight this time. Antenna is 1/2 of
homebrew buddipole modified with PL-259 to fit mag-mount. Location was
the worst I could find - parking lot in front of my condo.
AA4XX-NC
ATS3 @ 2W, 13'fishing pole vert, 7.4V 840mA Li-Po battery pack, Koss
earbuds, Paddlette paddles I decided to operate 40M Pedestrian Mobile
for the March SP. The antenna was a center loaded vertical on a Black
Widow 13 ft fishing pole. I used one 34' counterpoise wire, which my dog
kept gnawing on during the contest. I wasn't expecting much from the
40M vertical, as the radiation resistance was around 300 ohms,
indicating a substantial loss factor. The operating site was a field
next to my house. This was my first experience operating /pm, and I
knew it was going to be an interesting night on 40M when the first
station I called (N7SR-MN) gave me a 579! I was absolutely astounded
that four stations in CA could copy the fishing pole vertical. As a
matter of fact, a number of states made it into the log (MN, DE, MD, CA,
FL, ID, IA, TX, GA, ME, NJ, CO). The average received RST was 559, with
two 339's and several 579-599 reports.
Contest Rate Sheet -
If you enjoy these Sprints, you might also enjoy the ARRL Contest Rate
Sheet. It's published every other Wednesday by Ward Silver, N0AX.
The ARRL Contest Rate Sheet offers a useful source of timely information
for both the active and casual contester and is available to ARRL
members via email free of charge directly from ARRL HQ. Check out the
web site at -

RESULTS -
Each contact received one point. If you didn't tell us the weight of
your station, or if your station weighed more than 30 pounds, we
assigned a weight of 30 pounds.
The soapbox is published separately in the ARS Sojourner which comes out
soon. Don't miss it! www.ARSqrp.com
Those who provided state or province information have it listed after
their callsign.
We hope everyone had a good time. See you in April!
