The June 2005 QRP Spartan Sprint was run 9 to 11 PM Monday night. It is
held the first Monday of each month. For those of you who have never
participated, I thought you might be interested in the report of this
month's running of the Spartan Sprint. Here is the report. Scores are
reported electronically shortly after the contest and the report comes
out just as promptly every month. I was the one who suggested putting
the state after the call to make the reporting more informative and you
will notice that I forgot to include -GA this time. 73 John.
Results of the June 2005 Spartan Sprint
The great conditions from the last couple of months were on vacation in
June. Thunderstorms and poor band conditions kept the numbers lower on
Monday.
Total logs this month were 65, down 23 from last month.
Here's the band statistics:
Band This Month Last Month
80M - 19 297 QSOs
40M - 344 1621 QSOs
20M - 1220 1321 QSOs
15M - 0 5 QSOs
10M - 0 0 QSOs
Total - 1583 3244 QSOs
Skinny Winners -
Mike AD5A had a total of 52 points to win this month's Sprint. All but
one of the contacts were on 20 meters. A brief move to 40 meters only
netted Mike one contact, but added the extra module weight to his total.
Second went to Phil K4PQC who had 37 contacts while watching the
thunderstorms create sparks on his coax.
Dick N4HAY took third, despite spider attacks, with 48 contacts and
under a third of a pound.
Tubby Division Winners -
Bruce K5PTC fought QRN to take first place with 93 contacts.
Mike K5NZ another QRN fighter took second with 83 QSOs.
Tom K3TW dodged thunderstorms and was rewarded with 75 contacts.
Single Band Entry Winners -
Of those who only entered on one band, here are the winners by band:
Skinny Division
40 Meters - K5GQ - 13 points at 9.29 points per pound
20 Meters - WA8HSB - 31 points at 124 points per pound
Tubby Division
40 Meters - K5GQ (again) - 13 QSOs
20 Meters - WN1GIV - 73 QSOs
Late Logs -
Pat VE3EUR had 7 contacts in May in the last hour of the contest.
Special Recognition, Outside Operation -
Mobile ops:
K7TP/8 - Sitting in my rental car in a hotel parking lot near Detroit
with a wire thrown into a tree. Had good fun but gave up about 45
minutes in due to mosquitoes and noise from the parking lot lights.
WA8REI - Operated from motor home in my driveway.
Outside Ops:
AE6N-AZ - Set up in the field with 100 degree heat. Came across some
techniques to simplify the erection, guying and attaching an antenna to
a fiberglass pole.
N0EVH-MO - Operated outdoors in the wife's flower garden. Why, because
that is where the gutter down spout is located. The KX1 tuner matched
the house gutter 1 to 1 with my body as the counterpoise.
KB9LCK - Operated on patio with Sierra, 12 NIMH "AA's" and Crappie pole
vertical.
W8VE - I bought a new portable 40 mtr - 10 mtr vertical at the 4 Days in
May Event at Dayton last month. I set up on my back yard.
AK0M-IA - I decided to operate outside in my yard, and set up the
doublet and the rig. Then the bugs arrived; I managed to fend off the
mosquitoes with Repel, but that just attracted the other little black
bugs into a cloud around and one me. So after 4 QSOs (yes, only four!),
I gave up and went inside. But it was a good rehearsal for Field Day!
RESULTS -
Each contact received one point. If you didn't tell us the weight of
your station, or if your station weighed more than 30 pounds, we
assigned a weight of 30 pounds.
The soapbox is published separately in the ARS Sojourner, which comes
out soon. Don't miss it! www.ARSqrp.com
Those who provided state or province information have it listed after
their callsign.
We hope everyone had a good time. See you in July.
