Hi Tom,
I'm at work and won't have access to home e-mail for a while. Can you post this
to the CQ Contest for me? Thanks.

One day in late 1983, I was at home running Americans split on 40 meters using
a special prefix. I can't remember which. After putting about 20 or so in the
log, a guy who had just moved back to Winnipeg called in. We chatted on 40 for
more than an hour, eventually QSYing back to the Canadian-only portion.
So began a friendship that lasted 24 years.
He and I shared too many cold ones, too many coffees, too many breakfasts at
Smitty's.
We entered the 1984 WPX SSB as multi-single and won as top Canadians. We won
the 1984 Can-Am contest. I thought his IC-745, which he won at Dayton in 1982,
was the cat's meow. It certainly beat my FT-100B.
We often split the two weekends of SS at his station. He was always a better
code man than I.
We went to Dayton, twice, both times staying up way too late in the contest
suite. Both times hauling way too much gear back from the flea market.
We went to Grand Beach and oogled the girls. We were best men at each other's
weddings. His, mine and then his again.
We were like brothers.
That friendship drew to a close yesterday when Derrick, VE4VV, passed away
after a lengthy disease.
73 old boy. See you in the pileups again some day.

Kelly, ve4xt
