Scott,
You might want to reset the band limits in the contesting software so you do
not see spots outside your band limits. I think most contesting software
has this capability. It is almost impossible to check every spot manually,
especially as one gets tired during the contest. I think every contester
has had a few of those out-of-band contacts during their lifetime.

Sounds like your method of logging a 0000 serial number is a good approach,
and provides a self imposed penalty.

Jeff

Thanks for all of the input from far and wide. The whole process has been a
positive learning event. Once again I am indebted to the stalwarts and
veterans of this hobby and this club who freely impart their sage wisdom and
advice freely. Truly this reflector is an unending fountain of knowledge and
I'm humbled to be allowed to dip my small cup into the pool of collective
experience.

I hope by sharing the lessons I have learned I will help others to avoid
having to go through the same angst.

This is what I did:
I have edited the Cabrillo file and re-entered the specific QSO that raised
this issue, as well as 6 others that I wrongly removed in a right-spirited
act of honesty.
The time, frequency, and call signs of the stations are accurate - as well
as my sent serial and exchange. Hopefully these stations will receive credit
for the contacts they legally and rightfully made.
I have entered 0000 for their serial number given to me, obviously busting
the exchange. This will cost me the contact, and whatever penalty is
assessed, but not harm the other station.
I hope this will have the intended effect.

I can't put the toothpaste back in the tube, but I can at least try to wipe
it up off the sink for the others...
