[SECC] Rule Change for CWTs beginning This Wednesday

Subject: [SECC] Rule Change for CWTs beginning This Wednesday

Please note that the bands for CWT Mini Tests beginning next Wednesday
and continuing at least through the end of December permit operation on
any or all of the six HF Contest bands, 160, 80, 40, 20, 15, and 10.
This is a change since I posted my weekly contest preview on Wednesday.
  73, John, K4BAI.

All:

The CWTs in October, November and December will all, now, allow you to use
any of 160, 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10 meter bands.

Depending on where you are during each session (1300Z, 1900Z, and 0300Z),
you will probably be able to extend your operating time for the full hour
by taking advantage of the new rule.

For example, if you're in North America during the 1900Z session, you are
most likely in full daylight. So, once you've worked 20 meters dry, you
are no longer forced to either quit or go to 40...now, you can try 15 or
even 10 meters. Chances are that others in your region will be doing the
same thing.

Similarly, at 1300Z in EU, you, too, now have the opportunity to go to 15
and 10 after 20 goes dry. That's a better option than going to 40 in full
daylight.

And, in Asia, at 0300Z, you have similar possibilities.

Having 160 m as an option also allows those of you who are in darkness
during a session to go to 160 m if you've run out of people to work on 40
and 80.

In any case, CWT scoring gives an advantage to those who work a lot of
different people on one band versus working the same people on several
bands. So, band hopping would not be an advantage. Instead, start on a
band where most people are likely to start (20m or 40m typically), then
either move up or down depending upon where you are and which session.

The October, November and December CWTs are a trial period for the new
rules. Please don't hesitate to comment about them on www.cwops.org as
that will have some influence on whether the rules become permanent or
revert back to just operating on 20, 40 and 80 meters.

Next Wednesday (12 October), these new rules go into effect. Several CWT
loggers already support the new bands. The 3830 score entry page should be
updated by then, too. If not, we will have a workaround (e.g. posting your
results on www.cwops.org).

CU in CWT,

Rob K6RB
