FT1000MP, Alpha 78, 1 KW, TH6DXX, dipole, zepp, tee vertical. 20M
seemed open
only to UA9/0 at the start. No sign of VK0EK or FT4JA on frequencies to
avoid.
Just before starting time, when I was considering stating on 40, N5ZO
showed up
very loud and then others on the west coast and weaker stations from th
east.
So, started on 20. No real rate to be had there, so on to 40 using only the
low dipole. Good rate and a lot of fun on 40. Pile-up on FT4JA, whom I had
worked earlier, didn't extend too high in the frequencies we usually use.
Worked F6JOE and UR5MM from Europe. Maybe could have worked a few more
Europeans if had used the zepp, which I had tuned for 80, with the 80M
inverted
vee being dedicated to being the "tee vertical" for 160M. No much QRN
on 40, but I started hearing distant rumbles of thunder shortly after the
half-way point. My XYL would have told me if the thunderstorm got
closer, so I
pushed on. 80M had excellent signals, particularly many strong west coast
signals. No DX head, but F6JOE said he hear me over in France. QRN was
very
high and it helped that I had already worked so many of the 80M stations
earlier on other bands. The level of activity on 80M suggests that a lot of
members don't operate below 40M. Or maybe it is just that many on the east
coast don't stay up and QRV for the latter part of the CWTs. I have started
getting ready for bed and working the 0300Z session in my pajamas. I don't
usually do that when we are on standard time. Apologies to those I was
unable
to identify under the QRN on 80M. At about 0250Z, the thunder seemed closer
and the QRN was higher, I moved to 160 at 0256Z and the QRN was much lower
there and I even worked two new multiplier stations there.
This weekend, KU8E and I will be QRV in the GA QSO Party from many GA
counties
and some of the QSOs will be from locations that count for NPOTA. We
will send
the NPOTA designations for those QSO. Hope all of you who can will
participate
in the GA QSO Party April 9 and 10. 73, John, K4BAI.
