This is actually a very interesting idea.  I guess my only concern
is that this sort of things probably happens once or twice during
a contest and dedicating the footswitch to addressing this issue
seems like a waste.  

Probably if you only use it once in a while, the footswitch will be
pushed under the table somewhere where you can't get to it and 
pressing Alt-K would be quicker.
