Folks,
I discovered my error! I had the base of the PTT transistor wired to the wire
coming from pin 15 of the port. I replaced it with the proper wire (from pin
16) and all is now fine. I have the electronics wired inside an A/B printer
switch...lots of wires! Thats my lame excuse :)
