[TRLog] Scoring the PSK31 contest

Subject: [TRLog] Scoring the PSK31 contest

I operated the PSK31 Millennium contest this past Saturday. After I was
done, I used UltraEdit in column mode to format my log to the same data and
column layout I thought TR would have done it. Then I tried to run it
through POST to have it total up my multipliers and score. I was not able
to come up with a logcfg.dat file that would do what is needed. I tried
several examples of a contest name I thought would be close, then tried to
add statements to add in the other multipliers. POST kept giving me an
error of "too many multipliers selected", or words to that effect.

According to the rules, scoring is the same as the CQ WW RTTY Contest.

Multipliers are the sum of: ARRL DX and WAE DX, (including W, VE, KH6 and
KL7), 48 U.S. states and 13 Canadian provinces, and CQ zone. Stations can
be worked once per band and multipliers count once per band.

Also, I didn't find a way to have it score one QSO point for your own
country, two QSO points for your own continent but not your own country, and
three QSO points for outside your continent.

I only made 25 contacts in the time I had to operate, so I ended up scoring
the log by hand after failing to make TR do it for me.

It seems to me that as versatile as TR is, I should have been able to make
it work, but I did not hit on the correct combination. One problem I had
was in interpreting the TR manual for the multiplier options and scoring
options. It would be nice to have a table in the manual listing what
multiplier and scoring options are used for each contest supported, and what
the multiplier and scoring options mean as far as what will be or will not
be counted.

For example, I don't operate enough contests to know the difference between
ARRL DXCC and CQ DXCC. I just trust TR to know the difference. But in this
case, do I pick one of these, or something else? And in section 5.5.3 Table
8, it would be nice to know what those scoring methods are. Maybe one of
them is what I needed, I don't know.

Sorry for the long posting, but I surely can't be the only person who
doesn't understand all these options and how to use them. I do understand
that TR does not do RTTY, but it seems to me that it ought to be able to
score the contest, if the proper options have been selected.

The official rules as sent out to the PSK31 email reflector follow.

thanks for your patience,

A reminder the scoring format is same as the CQ RTTY Contest. Note the power
limits.

Announcing:

The Millennium PSK31 Contest :1200 UTC January 1 2000 to 1200 UTC January
2, 2000

Sponsored by the Chautauqua Contest Club.

Since the Autumn CCCC PSK31 contest was so successful ,with participants
from 100 countries, we decided to try a millennium contest. Hopefully any
end of century hangovers will have dissipated. Yes, we know it is New Years
Day for many but that's why we chose the date.

To make scoring easier than the last contest, we have "stolen" the scoring
format from CQ's CQ World Wide RTTY Contest. CQ's format is supported by
most contest software.

Objective: For amateurs around the world to contact other amateurs in as
many CQ Zones and countries as possible using the PSK31 Mode

Contest Period: 1200 UTC January 1 2000 to 1200 UTC January 2, 2000

Note: The total contest period is 24 hours. All stations may operate the
entire 24 hour period; there are no required off time periods for any
entries. Note the start and end times are 1200 UTC (noon GMT)

Operator Classes

Power classifications LP =. Low Power 30 watts or less
HP = High Power 31-100 watts

Note : No operation over 100 watts is allowed.

1. Single Operator, All Band LP

2. Single Operator, All Band HP

3. Single operator , Single band. LP

4. Single Operator, Single band HP

Note:
Only one (1) transmitter and one (1) band permitted during the same time
period (defined as ten [10] minutes). Once the station has begun operation
on a given band, it must stay on that band for 10 minutes; listening time
counts as operating time.

Modes: PSK31 ONLY.

Bands: 80, 40, 20, 15, and 10 meters (follow band plan for PSK31 operation
as suggested by http://aintel.bi.ehu.es/frecuencies.html spread out from
bottom edge of the IARU RTTY bandplan.

Valid Contacts: A given station may be contacted only once per band
.Additional contacts are allowed with the same station on each of the other
bands as well.

Exchange: Stations within the 48 continental United States and the 13
Canadian areas must transmit RST, State or VE area, and CQ Zone number. All
other stations must transmit RST and CQ Zone number.

Countries: The ARRL and WAE country lists will be used.

Note: The USA and Canada count as country multipliers. Example: The first US
State and Canadian area you work not only count as a multiplier for the
state or area, but also count as a country multiplier for each band.

QSO Points: One (1) QSO point for contacts within your own country. Two (2)
QSO points for contacts outside your own country but within your own
continent. Three (3) QSO points for contacts outside your own continent.

Multiplier Points: One (1) multiplier point for each US state (48) and each
Canadian area (13) on each band. One (1) multiplier point for each DX
country in the ARRL and/or WAE lists on each band. Note: KL7 and KH6 are
country multipliers only and not state multipliers. One (1) multiplier point
for each CQ Zone worked on each band. Maximum of 40 Zones per band.
