Most of mine is CW also and I have never experienced any CW hiccups at all -
but during a contest I do not run any other apps. If you have a bunch of
stuff in your start up group, like a diagnostic program, a virus scanner, am
email application, a clock synchronizer, etc. these could cause the problems
you describe. I also do not have the floppy symptoms you describe, but it
could be from a windows utility program called "fastfind" I believe that
tries to search drives and build indexes in the background. When you have
one of these floppy incidents, do a ctrl+alt+delete and look at the task
list to see what sort of stuff is running in the background. Sometimes
utilities like that get installed without you even knowing they are there.

Because most of my contesting is CW, I've noticed that when running TR in a
DOS window occasionally the CW gets "slurry" for a second or two -- seems
as if Windows is doing something in the background that steals CPU cycles.
My work-around has been to reboot to the command prompt. Is there a better
way? Is it possible, for example, to run TR under Win98 such that it has
exclusive ownership of the processor for as long as it's running?

While I'm asking Win98 questions, does anyone know how to stop the machine
from periodically thrashing the (empty) floppy drive? It acts as if it is
trying to read the directory from it, and retrying a number of times before
it moves on to something more worth doing. first time my wife heard it,
she thought my computer had gotten sick. It's annoying at best.

Thanks for any advice!
