Well, my opinion is you have a bad connection at some point in the
cable, and when you reversed it, you " accidentally?" fixed it.

Screen savers are a waste of resources, and easily done away with. Not
as easy as it sounds on the power save, standby, ect since they are
usually a function of the BIOS.

Only cure I can think of is a TSR which "pings" the machine a few
seconds before the items mentioned occur.
