Looking at the QST Product Review for the Omni VI ("QST", January 1993)
it looks like the differences are:

- DSP and menuing system for user-programmable features
- band registers (two registers per band), programmable to keep the 100
kHz-and-down digits the same when bands are changed (e.g., 14.025,
21.025, 28.025, etc.)
- RIT and XIT, and ability to clear them without centering a knob
- 100 memorys that store freq, mode, filters, RIT/XIT on/off, split
status (note that the VI+ and late model VI do *not* remember the unique
RIT offset due to a bug in the firmware which is not yet fixed) plus a
scratch pad memory
- "REV" button, equivalent of Kenwood's TF-Set (Note again, REV does not
properly calculate the RX frequency if XIT is being used - it is 200-300
Hz off on the VI+)
- Separate Receive antenna jack with front panel selector and indicator
- built-in keyer, 10-61 wpm, with front panel speed control, weight
adjustable from keypad.
- variable speed memory and band scanning
- cross-band, cross-mode capability
- FSK mode with fixed 170 Hz shift; other shifts must use AFSK.
- large, clear LED display, yellow with green 10 Hz digit plus two
secondary displays for clock, RIT/XIT offset, etc.
- TWO serial ports, a DB-25 RS-232C, and 1/8" mini-phone jack for the
ICOM CI-V interface with speeds available up to 19,200 bps

The author cited the Omni-VI as lacking three features most comparable
rigs offered:
1. automatic self tuner (TenTec addressed to this in their ads)
2. general coverage reception
3. SSB transmitted-audio monitor

Hope this is a useful summary.

        73, Duane

What features were added when TenTec introduced the Omni 6 to replace
the Omni 5. I've run across the couple of items listed in QST (100
memories, RIT, DSP notch), but would be interested in a more detailed
summary. Who
knows, a clean Omni 5 might make a good introduction into TenTec HF.
