According to what I have read in different instruction sheets included
with some kits,
the reason for mounting an IC directly on the board is heat transfer. I
suppose if you
glued a chunk of metal on top of an I.C. before plugging it into a
socket, it would do
essentially the same thing. Anyone disagree? There may also be issues
like lead
inductance on a project that operates on VHF,  UHF, or microwave, but I
don't
know where the cutoff would be- 73, -Web in Myrtle Beach, SC
