Your ground is not a good RF ground.  Ok for lightning maybe but not for RF.
The earth is a dielectric not a conductor.  To make a good RF ground is a
royal pain in the you know where.  Why don't you try the TT artificial
ground kit.  It's probably better than the MFJ unit.
