Another issue with such an antenna, is that a long wire will be directional to
its ends, while a better all around gain antenna for listening to all possible
DX directions would be an extended Double Zepp, (5/8 wave either side of
center insulator where you feed with ladder line, and then balun at rig) . 
Invert the Zepp, as a Vee off your pole, and you have a dandy DX listener.

For the signal overload situation, you could either use some aux relay to
switch attenuation in, or simple connect biased diodes back to back across the
aux ant. input.  Actually, Ten Tec may have made internal provision for
protection, check your manual.
