Yeah, CW and TT often are thought of as one.
You answered your own question, ie, you said you don't do much
conversational CW. Well, do it. And do it more and more in your head. Walk
around the shack while you listen, see if that helps retention. If nothing
else, it will show you why it is very important that you copy in your head;
it frees up the rest of your body. If a character trips you up, try and
ignore it. We all suffer or have suffered from the habit of  "guessing" the
rest of the word after the first couple of letters. If you will get on 30
meters or 40 meters, get into some conversatinal QSOs (several in a row) you
will quickly find some of the problems disappearing. If speed is the
problem, go slower and tell the other guy your situation. Soon the
conversation will speed up and quite likely you will be the one speeding it
up.
