An "analog" of this approach, though perhaps not as complex, is used in the
WriteLog contest logging software.  Wayne, W5XD, the author, allows you to
choose and place each of the "controls" or information areas of the screen
presentation anywhere on the open window that you like.  He also has
additional windows for bandmapping, and some of the control areas can be
dragged off the open window and placed on the desktop where desired.  His
software download is not all that large (<3 MB or so) for having this kind
of capability.
