This can also be accomplished with AM. The NRSC response mask is such an
example in the commercial AM broadcast industry. I believe the impetus of
SSB suppressed carrier transmission was in offering much more than radiating
the essential parts of the human voice. Half the spectrum is preserved
while through the use of a heterodyning an oscillator (BFO) against the
transmitted signal in the receiver, much less power can be used to
accomplish transmission over similar distances and the perceived effect of
skywave fading is reduced. Thus, the SSB mode offers better power
efficiency than that of AM.

What definition? The limitation is a purely a function of the technology
used to suppress the alternate sideband. DSP techniques over the past
decade have obliterated the "definition."

If you know what you are doing, it takes little time and money to create a
high-fidelity sound on SSB and it can be accomplished without a "rack-full"
of compressors, equalizers and audio limiters. It simply takes sufficient
knowledge of I.F. filtering and audio circuit design.
