Project Information

DigiNet Consulting was contracted to provide the Penn State University EE
Antenna Lab with a solution to provide remote access to a Pegasus Radio
System connected to a Windows NT station on the local network. DigiNet
presents a two-tier solution. In order to provide password-protected remote
access to users who are not authorized by the FCC to transmit over the
amateur radio, the Pegasus Internet Control program was developed. This
java-enabled graphical user interface (GUI) is hosted on a web page on the
Xitami/Pro web server that resides on the local computer to which the
Pegasus radio transceiver is attached. After successfully logging on, a
user authorized to receive-only can listen to amateur radio transmissions
broadcast across the Pegasus system via a Speak Freely software interface
and have access to some of the radio controls. Using the same GUI web page,
a remote user that has a higher level of authorization may also transmit
over the Pegasus radio.

The second part of DigiNet?s solution uses Virtual Network Computing (VNC)
Software. With VNC, the remote user can access all of the Pegasus radio
functions. The user can, in fact, access the entire local PC. Although
password-protected, this solution may best be reserved for a system
administrator.
