Jim, Dick Flanagan's Icom list has since Day One always replied to the list
by default. One must do a little extra in order to send a private response.
This has been argued repeatedly over the years with the outcome always
being that Dick insists that the list remain "as is." I think that most of
us agree with him.
Obviously, the compelling reason is to ensure that posted material is
shared by everyone. On the one hand, this policy forces one to consider
whether something should be posted at all if it is going to everyone. That
in itself maintains a degree of order and decorum. It also ensures that
anything of general or technical interest will be shared. It also makes you
think twice before posting something of doubtful accuracy or questionable
taste. I support this mode of operation and can find no real fault with it.
On the other hand, embarrassing mistakes have happened when folks intent on
a personal response found to their dismay that their message was on the
list for everyone to read. In my experience, that has been the only real
reason for opposing the default list posting.
So, being active on a number of lists which do it both ways, I can work
with either way, but the "post to the list" mode seems to be the best way
to share information.
