"I would like to hear from guys that have done
any mods to brighten up the receive audio. Mine sounds
kinda restricted and flat to my ears. Are the mods
worth doing or does hiss and noise negate any
improvement?"

Steve,

I would suggest searching the reflector archive
because there's been a ton of discussion on this topic
over the years. For starters, you might try going
here in your browser (on one line):

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&as_qdr=all&q=audio+++mod+%22omni+6%22+site%3Alists.contesting.com&btnG=Google+Search

I believe the bottom line is that you can get a bit of
improvement by installing the Inrad audio mod or
replacing suspect audio coupling caps and installing
Inrad 2.8Khz filters in both if's, as well as
re-aligning the carrier set point. However, the Omni
VI is hamstrung by circuitry that routes the audio
through the DSP and notch filter IC's, even if those
circuits aren't engaged. Bypassing those IC's isn't
difficult to do, but it probably means amplifying the
audio externally and losing DSP/notch functions for
this higher fi audio line.

GL/73,
Barry N1EU
